Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take for my child to get seen by you?

Within a few days or weeks. It will NOT take months or years to see one of our psychologists.

After the assessment, when will I receive the report?

Within 1-2 weeks.

When should I consider getting my child a psycho-educational assessment?

If you have any concern regarding your child’s cognitive, academic, behavioral or emotional functioning that has not improved or has worsened. Book a FREE 30-minute consultation with us to see how we can help.

Do I need a referral from a medical doctor or any other professional to see you?

No. You can come directly to us.

Don't public schools provide psycho-educational assessments for free?

Yes, most schools/divisions will either employ a School Psychologist to provide services, which include psycho-educational assessments, or will hire a contracted 3rd party or organization. However, due to an increased need for mental health and special education services for students, along with very limited school/divisional budgets, the wait time to be seen by the School Psychologist can be exceptionally long (if ever seen at all).

Can you diagnose my child?

Yes! Psychologists are able to diagnose any mental health condition found in the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual, 5thedition (DSM-5) that they are both experienced and have competence in. This includes, but is not limited to:

· Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

· Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

· Oppositional & Defiant Disorder (ODD)

· Conduct Disorder (CD)

· Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

· Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

· Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

· Intellectual Disability (ID)

· Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

· Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) with an impairment in Reading (i.e. Dyslexia), Writing (i.e. Dysgraphia) or Math (i.e. Dyscalculia)

Do you work with both individuals and organizations?

Yes! We not only work with individual parents and young adults but we also work with schools, hospitals, clinics, psychiatry offices, social workers, colleges, universities, educational authorities, government agencies, Child & Family Services, Jordan’s Principle and other organizations.

Do you work with college/university students?

Yes! Various issues may only arise in a post-secondary environment, and in those cases we work with students in any type of college or university-level program. We can also conduct testing to assist with the initial transition from high school to post-secondary studies.

Do you do assessments for giftedness?

Yes! Contact us OR book a FREE 30-minute consultation call with us to discuss what your specific needs are and how we can help.

Do you offer therapy and counselling?

Yes, some of our team members offer this! Please contact us directly for more information.

How long is a psycho-educational assessment valid?

There is no expiration date per se on psycho-educational assessments. Generally speaking, they are considered to be valid for 3-5 years. However, if there are significant changes in performance, behaviour or educational needs this may necessitate a re-evaluation sooner. The answer also specifically depends on what the assessment is used for. For example, if the assessment is for college/university purposes, they will likely want an assessment within 3 years of entry. If the assessment is used for provincial programs such as Adult Disability Services or Community Living Disability Disabilities, the assessment must be completed prior to the age of 18.

Are virtual assessments valid?

Yes! There is research that suggests that in-person and virtual assessments are comparable. For example, a recent meta-analysis (which is a review of multiple studies) by Brearly et al. (2017) found no significant differences between in-person and virtual assessments across various populations, including individuals with cognitive impairments and intellectual disabilities. This suggests that virtual assessments can yield comparable results to in-person assessments. This has been supported by other research studies as well including Cullum et al. (2014) and Wright (2018a, 2018b, 2020).

Are virtual assessments appropriate for everyone?

No. Research has identified that virtual assessments are not appropriate for young children aged 6 or under, as well as individuals who are very dysregulated or oppositional. In these cases, in-person assessments are required.

Can you assess my child through Jordan's Principle?

Yes! We are a Jordan's Principle approved provider. We can submit an application to Jordan's Principle to pay for an assessment if they are eligible. Please contact us to start this process.
