With controlling anxiety, anger, aggression or sadness?
With not listening to adults, bullying others or school avoidance?
Can't seem to focus on any one thing for a significant period of time?
Surviving but not thriving? Unsure of vocational interests or job-readiness skills?
Difficulties with initiating and maintaining friendships with others?
We conduct psycho-educational assessments for children, adolescents and young adults.
A psycho-educational assessment is a standardized assessment of various skills and abilities:
· Cognitive skills (intelligence and learning abilities, attention/focus)
· Academic skills (reading, writing/spelling, math and oral language skills)
· Adaptive skills (everyday independent living skills that are needed to survive and thrive)
· Social skills (ability to initiate and maintain friendships with others)
· Emotional functioning (ability to regulate emotions and mood)
· Behaviour (ability to act appropriately and perform)
· Mental Health (to confirm or rule out any mental health disorders)
1. Better understanding their strengths and challenges in order to develop a picture of how they are functioning, which is then used to make specific recommendations and list applicable strategies
2. Determine eligibility for: (a) school learning plans such as a Curriculum Modification Plan or an Individualized Education Plan (b) Children/Adult Disability Services including Community Living Disability Services (c) Disability Tax Credit form
3. Diagnosing any mental health disorders or learning disabilities, along with a referral and letter of support to either a support agency a medical doctor for a medication assessment (if required)
We provide you with information about the entire assessment process, answer any questions or concerns you might have, and get your written consent to proceed.
We conduct interviews, review files and send forms and questionnaires about you/your child that ask a wide variety of questions including background, medical and developmental history, behaviour, emotions and other skills.
You schedule a day/time for testing that works best for you and/or your child.
The assessment report, along with any support letters and forms we’ve filled out on your behalf, will be submitted to you for review.
After you’ve had sufficient time to review all the documents, you can set up a meeting with us to review the results via Zoom or phone.
The assessment can take place virtually, at our Winnipeg office, or we can travel to your community outside of Winnipeg.
A typical assessment is 2 hours to complete. Many of the testing activities will feel like games/puzzles and are conducted on an iPad.

We take a holistic view of you or your child and dive deep into understanding how they are functioning across all areas. Traditional health models focus on being reactive rather than being proactive; however, we believe in both approaches. While we want to address any current concerns you might have, we also want to take a look across all skill areas and see what there is for strengths to be built upon. We pride ourselves on thorough, practical and meaningful assessments that remain both relevant and applicable now and over time.
The demand for mental health services has never been higher. This has put a strain on care providers to be able to keep up with that demand, causing very long waitlists. We recognize the importance of performing these assessments with a sense of urgency in order to provide that help as quickly as possible. It’s our goal and mission to provide you service within days or weeks; not months or years.
Psychology services are expensive. They're not covered by Manitoba Health and may not be covered by certain benefit/insurance plans. This restricts access to psychology services for many. We’ve taken several steps to make it more affordable than over. Firstly, we offer virtual assessments at a reduced rate. Secondly, our in-person assessments are extremely competitive with other service providers. Finally, we have partnered up with Affirm to offer financing for those that could not otherwise afford to pay out-of-pocket.

Yes, most schools/divisions will either employ a School Psychologist to provide services, which include psycho-educational assessments, or will hire a contracted 3rd party or organization. However, due to an increased need for mental health and special education services for students, along with very limited school/divisional budgets, the wait time to be seen by the School Psychologist can be exceptionally long (if ever seen at all).

There is no expiration date per se on psycho-educational assessments. Generally speaking, they are considered to be valid for 3-5 years. However, if there are significant changes in performance, behaviour or educational needs this may necessitate a re-evaluation sooner. The answer also specifically depends on what the assessment is used for. For example, if the assessment is for college/university purposes, they will likely want an assessment within 3 years of entry. If the assessment is used for provincial programs such as Adult Disability Services or Community Living Disability Disabilities, the assessment must be completed prior to the age of 18.
Yes! There is research that suggests that in-person and virtual assessments are comparable. For example, a recent meta-analysis (which is a review of multiple studies) by Brearly et al. (2017) found no significant differences between in-person and virtual assessments across various populations, including individuals with cognitive impairments and intellectual disabilities. This suggests that virtual assessments can yield comparable results to in-person assessments. This has been supported by other research studies as well including Cullum et al. (2014) and Wright (2018a, 2018b, 2020).
No. Research has identified that virtual assessments are not appropriate for young children aged 6 or under, as well as individuals who are very dysregulated or oppositional. In these cases, in-person assessments are required.
